Page One Hundred Twenty-Seven

Waiting for Joel sucks. You watch him get scanned... watch as he gives you a little wave and disappears inside with one of the guards. You want to just run in after him. Like a normal person could.

Nope. Freaks not allowed.

You can't really resent your immunity; after all, it's what brought you to Joel. But sometimes you'd really like to be able to wear short sleeves in public. To goof around with your friends or the town kids and not have to worry about your sleeve accidentally getting pushed up.

To be able to follow Joel inside a fucking building.

You CAN follow him... if you kill the guard, an evil little voice in your head whispers. There's only one now! It probably wouldn't be hard. You don't look threatening... well, other than the gun on your hip, but it's not exactly the arsenal that Joel totes around. You imagine the look on Joel's face when you find him inside... and then the look when you casually tell him you offed the guard to get in.

A girl can dream, right?

When you're sure it's been at least ten minutes, you start to get as annoyed as you are antsy. Joel said it would just take a minute to find Danny and come back out with the report to bring back to the guy's family in Jackson. And since Joel's not exactly the chatty type, what could be taking so long?

Another few agonizing minutes later (or is it a half hour? It feels like forever), the guard turns and goes inside -- quite abruptly. You wait there for a few seconds before saying fuck it to yourself and charging for the entrance. Please, no one steal our shit while we're inside... Joel left all his weapons with you rather than surrendering them to the guards. You probably should have grabbed a few of them before running inside!

You hear an alarm blaring, but you don't see anyone around. "Joel?" you call tentatively.

Maybe they're on another floor. You find a stairwell and quickly climb up to the second floor. You hear voices as soon as you step through the door, but you're in a little corridor, hidden from view for now...

You hear someone yelling down the hall... Is that the guard? It's impossible to make out any words with the alarm screaming at you. It's super loud, where you are.

You have no idea what's going on... could infected have come in somehow? Or one of the patients turned? (no, they wouldn't have passed the scan!) Could it be hunters trying to rob the place? -and yet you instinctively know that it's none of those -- that this has something to do with Joel. But what?!

You're not going to find out anything just hiding over here. You move into the hallway, where there's nowhere to hide, but... you haven't done anything to these people. Would they just open fire on you for no reason?

You start to call for Joel again, but something tells you not to. The guard is moving around, walking into rooms and coming back out a few seconds later. He's headed away from you, so he hasn't spotted you. Is he looking for Joel, too? If he is, and Joel's hiding in one of these rooms, that guard's a dead man.

The guard turns his head almost enough to see you -- but you duck into a room before he can. There's a patient in the bed: an old woman with long white hair. Her eyes widen in alarm and she presses a button on the side of her bed. Repeatedly. It doesn't seem to be doing anything. Oh... the gun! You holster it. "It's okay, I'm not gonna hurt you. I heard the alarm and... do you know what's going on? Is there an intruder?"

She just stares at you. Presses the fucking button. Maybe there's something wrong with her and she can't talk, or... her brain is fucked up. Joel's told you about some diseases old people used to get (nowadays, most people don't live long enough to get them), and you're tempted to try to talk to her and see if you can figure out if she has one of them -- but you come to your senses a second later. Find Joel! If she can't help you--

You peek into the hallway... all clear. You move down the hall. The guard must be in a room because you don't see him down the corridor. ...for longer than a few seconds. And then--

"Freeze!" Someone is right behind you! You stop. You've done nothing wrong, and you're not even holding your gun at the moment, so... "She's by 212," the someone-behind-you says into some kind of radio or transmitter (you hear the click of static when they release the button). "Turn around," he barks at you. "Slowly. Hands up!"

You do as he says and find a man in a lab coat pointing a gun at you. "Look... you have the wrong person," you inform him, trying to keep your voice calm. "I'm only here looking for a friend. I didn't steal anything, or... hurt anyone..."

He doesn't do that asshole-laugh thing, doesn't say anything jerk-ish... he's actually looking at you with a curious expression on his face. Like he has no idea why you would be here (even though you just told him), or... fuck, maybe he's never encountered a teenager before! He almost looks... sympathetic?

He's pointing a gun at you, doofus, you remind yourself.

And he still hasn't said anything. "Um... what do you want?" you ask him conversationally.

"Nothing. Yet." He glances at your gun. "I'm gonna need to take that from you, though."

You wonder if he was calling the guard on the... ah, yes, you see a walkie talkie, similar to the ones you have in Jackson, clipped to his belt. ...Is he gonna take it, or am I supposed to hand it to him?

This guy doesn't look very comfortable with the gun. And he's... not very intimidating. You could probably take him. ...if that's the way you want to play this?

If you fight, turn to page 205.

If you surrender, turn to page 214.

oh, wow. Yeah, you get bugged about that. I get some critic too, but not so bad. Sorry, I don't reply here or read some of your comments after I put one, but as I continue with the option I do not see them unless I have to go back to pick another option that is close. I don't receive any notification for this so I don't know when you answer me. But be sure that I will read all the option of this story, I want to see all the endings.

You would have to log in with your facebook, like you did on the oneshots...I think? Maybe that was just easier for you to check. It's okay, I'm just happy you're enjoying the book! And if you look for your comments you'll know if you've read a page or not, otherwise you might forget after you've done so many...
