Page One Hundred Sixty-Seven

Patience has never been one of your virtues.

Joel doesn't want you to look around, so if you wait for him, you'll miss out on your chance to explore. He'll understand...

Families upstairs, patients on this floor, Joel on the first floor... what's on the second floor? Much as you want to ride the elevator, you decide a staircase would be quicker (and safer, with no bells and lights disclosing your location). Besides, you and Joel have had some bad luck with elevators! You don't want to run into Joel on his way back up, though, so you need to find one on the other end of the floor. The hospital isn't at all like you imagined... not like the ones in movies, with lots of people bustling about. Of course, nothing is how it is in the movies, so it was silly of you to imagine it that way.

You do find a staircase on the other side. When you emerge on the second floor, you feel guilty, like you shouldn't be here... and not just because Joel told you to stay put. I better sneak around and hide if I see anyone... just in case...

Unfortunately, all the interesting stuff is probably going on in the areas where the people actually are. You kind of want to talk to them... but you also kind of feel like you shouldn't. And you're not really sure why. You overhear snippets of conversation; the doctors, or whatever they are, don't bother to close their doors. Stuff about cultures and counts and variables and... dishes?... nothing that makes any sense to you. You sneak by a person working in another room alone. You're almost all the way to the other end of the floor, ready to go back and apologize to Joel for disobeying him, when some noise coming from behind a closed door gets your attention.

It sounds like...

You promptly blush.

It can't be that. You have a filthy mind!

But what else could it be? There aren't any patients on this floor... no sick people who might be moaning in pain...

No-- it's pleasure. Definitely pleasure. It IS what I thought at first... a woman moaning! People are fucking in one of the lab-type rooms. The door is shut, but all the doors have large windows in them. You probably shouldn't look. -Okay, of course you shouldn't look. Rafael said that people live here, so it's just a couple having sex... in their home... privately...

You have to look. How could you not? They're right there -- and you've never seen real live not-on-a-TV-screen people having sex before! Which... you suppose is normal. Most people just do it -- they don't watch others do it. But that's not an option for you now! Joel always tells you real life isn't like the movies -- well, now you can see for yourself. Too bad you don't have a peephole here (ha!) so you have to be careful and not let them see you... well, surely they're too occupied with each other to notice little old me spying on them, right?

You creep over to the door and inch your head up until you can see through the window in the door. It's a man and a woman. The woman is the one you have to worry about seeing you, because she's facing your direction, sitting on a counter against the wall, and the man...

You blush harder. His pants are pooled by his ankles, and you have a clear view of his ass. It's not a bad-looking ass... but Joel's is nicer, you conclude, of course. The woman has no pants on. Her legs are wrapped around the guy's waist, and he's moving back and forth... fascinated as you are by this scenario in general, you can't help feeling disappointed; you can't really see anything. Their private areas (other than the dude's ass) are obscured from your view. The woman is wearing a T-shirt, so you can't even see what her boobs look like. The guy's wearing a T-shirt, too. You don't recognize it, at least not from the back, but you're getting a sinking suspicion that you do recognize the tattoo on his bicep...

It's Danny! It sure does look like him... right hair color and length, right build... you'd have to see his face to be absolutely sure, but that tattoo -- how many men have snakes slithering around their arms? ...Maybe a lot? No one else in Jackson does, though. You can see the woman's face -- and of course, she's not his wife. You left his poor worried wife back in Jackson. Worried because he's been gone so long. Is this WHY? Because he wants to keep fucking one of the doctors? Or, worse -- one of the doctor's wives?! And he has two little kids at home! What the fuck is he DOING?

Your stomach twists uneasily. What a fucking asshole! The woman is whimpering more than moaning... her eyes are closed, head thrown back... Danny's either resting his head on her neck or doing something to it, and her arms are clutching his shoulders... now his hair... it does sort of look like she's in pain, like she's grimacing or something, and yet... she also really seems to be enjoying herself. Do people always look so weird when they're fucking?

You wonder if she knows that Danny has a wife and kids at home. Maybe she knows and doesn't care? You feel guilty watching them now -- and not because you're violating their privacy. You feel like you ought to do something. Like what? Interrupt their little party to give them a piece of your mind?

...Yeah, maybe!

Maybe you shouldn't. Maybe you should just tell Joel and see what he thinks.

If you barge in there, turn to page 244.

If you stick to being a voyeur, turn to page 247.
