CYOA Page 228
Sep. 11th, 2013 02:00 amAnger is a powerful emotion. Overpowerful, at times... but feeling it helps you not feel the pain. And you very much need that right now.
Fucking asshole... all I did was LOVE him, and he's LEAVING me for it? you fume inwardly (you're trying to convince yourself that Joel is actually a fucking asshole. ...or a non-fucking one, it would seem). Well, I'lll show HIM. I'll leave him FIRST!
You heard the squeak of the sliding glass door, signaling to you that Joel's out back. Then I'll go out the FRONT... which is better anyway because slamming a sliding door that you have to slam just to get it to shut normally isn't nearly as satisfying as slamming a regular door. Halfway down the stairs, it occurs to you that it would be wise to put your shoes on. Your jeans probably, too, but fuck your jeans... and halfway back to the room to put your shoes on, you decide FUCK MY SHOES, too. You're too pissed off to give a fuck! Right? Right!
So off you go, clad only in Joel's scantily-buttoned shirt and your underwear. You decide you're too pissed off to grab your gun or a flashlight, too. Joel will bring that stuff when he chases after you, anyway.
...If he chases after you. What if he doesn't care?
Well, that's why you're going. DUH, you chastise yourself. Either this will make him chase after you, or he won't care enough to chase after you -- and if he doesn't care, your life is over anyway, so why worry about your gun?
You need Joel to know you're going, but you also need to get a decent head start on him... you'll probably have to hide somewhere until you can determine which way he's going -- and he'll be really easy to spot with a flashlight beam bouncing around. You wish you could go scope out a place first, but you can't risk Joel coming back inside the house and catching your carefully-planned 'impulsive' flight from the house. The sun set while you were attempting to seduce Joel... but there's enough celestial light outside that you should be able to move quickly.
You creep as quietly as you can through the house, fumbling along the walls blindly until you find the front door. You unlock it... then open and close it experimentally a few times. Yes, this will do nicely... as long as Joel's listening hard enough... and isn't he always when he's Outside?
You take a deep breath. Here we go... you push the door as far in as it will go, then grab the doorknob and pull with all your might, your momentum bringing it shut with a good hard SLAM! that you're sure was hard enough to jiggle what remains of the windows... and hopefully catch Joel's attention. You fly down the hill, glad that your bare feet will serve to keep you quiet and stealthy... they won't betray you the way the clop-clopping of your shoes might.
It's hard to find a good hiding place with everything bathed in shadow... not knowing which house doors will open (and open quickly)... so you decide you'll keep running through the streets, turning corners on a whim. Joel will be moving slowly anyway, because he doesn't know which way I went, and he has to take the time to LOOK all over the place instead of just running...
After a few minutes, you stop to catch your breath and assess the situation. Is Joel aware that you left? Is he searching for you?
You have no idea; you achieved your goal of getting far away from him in a very short span of time.
You don't miss your pants. You're not even cold, amazingly. I guess from the running? ...okay, so NOW where do I go?
You weren't paying particular attention to what streets you were running down. You do know the general direction of 'your' house, though. You make note of where the moon is in the sky, in case you get turned around somewhere. It's not the ideal landmark (...skymark?) to use, but it's all you've got.
You haven't heard Joel calling for you at all, so it's probably safe to walk now instead of run.
You're pondering whether you should have done something more to get Joel's attention -- like, say, chucking a brick through a window? -- when you finally hear it! A distant "Ellie?"... followed by an "Ellie!" ...and something else you can't make out.
Good! You hope he's worried about all the possible harm that could come to you out here.
Now that you know he's out here, it's only a matter of time before he finds you... but he needs to find you when you want him to. Which is... well, you're not sure when. Just... not yet.
You start running again. Away from the sound of Joel's voice.
You run until you have a stitch in your side and a pebble or something in the sole of your foot that won't shake loose. You find a patch of moonlight in which to study your foot... but you can't see shit. A flashlight would be helpful. Did we put tweezers in the first aid kit? you wonder.
You realize you can't hear Joel anymore. Did he give up already? A pain stabs you that has nothing to do with your side or your foot.
FUCK the pain -- I am ANGRY. NOT SAD.
But you're nothing if Joel's not around to witness it.
No way in hell are you going to run back toward him, though. Fuck THAT. Time for a new tactic!
You start to yell. "Yoohoooooo! Anyone around?"
You start walking down the street... trying very hard not to hobble.
"Hellooooooo? HellOOOOOOooooo! Anyone?!" There aren't a lot of houses out here, really... they're spaced quite far apart from each other... but really, all you need is one person to--
--to what? You don't even know if you want anyone other than Joel to hear you.
And you still don't hear Joel. ...or anyone else, because it's a fucking ghost town.
Well, I only just barely started yelling... you keep moving. "Yoohoooo! Teenage girl out here! Half naked! Anyone interested?!"
You feel slightly naughty, making it sound like... ha! Who cares? No one's here!
"Teenage girl who's TOTALLY READY AND WILLING TO HAVE SEX here!" You can practically hear Joel in your head, scolding you... telling you to shut the hell up... it nearly makes you giggle in spite of yourself.
"Ellie!"
So there he is! Still far away-ish. You don't know if he even heard you. But if you can hear him, it stands to reason he can probably hear you now. "Leave me alone!" you yell as loud as you can.
What should I yell next... something vulgar?... Maybe I should-- You stop dead in your tracks.
There's a person -- a man -- emerging from the shadows to your left...
"You in trouble, honey?" the man calls to you.
He doesn't strike you as threatening... but people aren't always what they seem out here. You'd feel way better if you had your gun. Or your pants... with your knife in your pocket... ugghhh I'm such an idiot!
Fuck -- what do I do?!
If you talk to the man (maybe Joel will get jealous!), turn to page 237.
If you scream and run toward Joel's voice (you'd rather not risk getting raped or killed to FIND OUT if he'd get jealous!), turn to page 241.
