Maybe I should switch careers?
Nov. 23rd, 2004 02:00 pmFinally, a story worthy of a post!
So this morning I came in really early to finish payroll. Really early. 3:45am arrival time. I usually don't get here until 6 on the due date but this payroll was scarier than the others, for reasons I won't bore you with here.
Here I am, half awake, running my zillion-page reports, all alone in a dark building.... at 5:15am I hear a noise. Sounded like something falling off a wall. Kinda spooky. I didn't think much of it, but a few seconds later I thought I better go take a look around - I had just entered the hallway in front of my office when I heard the horrible CRASH!!!! of shattered glass - I ran down the hall towards the noise and, to my horror, saw a hooded figure reaching through the outside window into our director's office and pulling his monitor out the window! This had already happened here once before in another office; obviously this guy thought us easy targets - we're in a deserted area sitting right off the freeway. I pounded on the pane of glass next to the interior door hoping to scare the guy into dropping the monitor. I shouted obscenities at him. I guess a girl, even a shouting one, is not very intimidating!
I decided I had better run outside to get a better look at him and possibly get a license plate number. But by the time I got around the corner he was already in the darkness surrounding a vehicle behind the building next to us - there are no lights over there, so all I could see was the brake lights. I had no clue what the vehicle looked like or whether it was a car or truck. As soon as I saw it I heard the tires squeal and it pulled away.
Not to be outdone, I hopped in my car and pursued the villains... okay, no, I actually didn't do that. Heh. I had a payroll to finish, after all! Come on! Feeling quite stunned by what had just happened, I contemplated for a minute whether I should call the cops or wait for management as they typically handle such things. If I should call them first, which one do I call? I don't want to wake anyone up at 5am if there's really nothing they can do... I really just wanted to get back to the payroll I came in so early to attend to. But I thought since this just happened I had better get the cops out here now to check things out. I called 911 and 3 cops arrived within 5 minutes.
The rest of the day I got teased about my "heroic" antics.... a couple people criticized me though and said I shouldn't have done anything. I never thought I WOULD do anything in such a situation, but when it happens you just get really pissed off. Like, how dare they do that on my watch! In this case I'm sure the guy thought the building deserted.
Since this is the second occurrence we're trying to get the property management to beef up the security here somehow. Whether it be cameras, bars on the windows, security patrollers, SOMEthing.... we have an alarm system on the building but of course I had disabled that when I came in - and how much good can it do when the guy is in and out in 30 seconds?
After all this drama I only got the payroll done 20 minutes late. Not bad, eh?
