As I was driving home from the mountains yesterday, feeling refreshed from my relaxing weekend but slightly depressed that it was coming to an end, I comforted myself with the thought of going to see Star Wars the next day. But that wouldn't be 'til after a loooooong day at work. Could I wait that long? Why the heck don't we just go see it tonight? And my bro was willing - so we went to the 9pm showing. Normally I would fall asleep in a movie starting so late, but I had slept in late the past 2 days and we had plenty of sugar and caffeine to consume during the film.
I doubt I would have fallen asleep without that stuff - the movie was excellent, and I tossed and turned all night, thinking about it. Even if I had slept soundly I would have only gotten 4 hours of sleep due to having to wake up early this morning. But it was worth it!
This one was by far the best of Episodes I - III. My brother says it's the best of all 6, but I don't know if I'd go that far (He's biased because the old ones don't have Natalie Portman in them). The first trilogy has the newness or originality going for it, as well as wonderful childhood memories as an edge.
**If you're still reading and you haven't seen the movie yet, don't read any further! I don't want to spoil it for anyone! Go see it and come back to this entry**
Hayden, Natalie, and Ewan all gave terrific performances. Watching Anakin transform was horrifying. The fact that it wasn't a surprise (to anyone who's seen ANY Star Wars flick) didn't lessen how horrifying it was to me. I just wanted to shake some sense into him. But... in a way it DID make sense for him to turn to the dark side. I empathized with him the whole time. He started out believing he was doing it to save his wife. And it escalated. We'd already seen how his anger could get the better of him (Ep.II), and add to his anger the feeling that everyone is against him, including the woman he loves - sure he'll embrace his anger and hatred. The fact that he inadvertently kills her (not by his actions towards her but his actions in general), only adds to his anguish.
And that scene where he gets burned and disfigured... and Obi-Wan with that one line where he conveys all his hurt and betrayal and confusion... "But you were the chosen one.... it was said you would destroy the sith, not join them!" - what an emotional moment.
The love story got to me too. I read the review in the paper where they scoff at it and say "at one point it appears they (Anakin & Padme) are following The Guiding Light rather than the Force" - but it didn't come off as soap-opera-y at all to me. There wasn't enough of those sweet scenes for my taste. The more tenderness between them, the more painful it is to watch Anakin turn. Okay, so there is cheesy dialogue throughout - come on, though, it's Star Wars! That's part of it!
Oh I can't wait to see it again.... but I will, 'til this weekend. I'll need to catch up on my sleep before then :)
