The beast was huge. About thirty meters long, and still growing at that. But young Anakin did not know this. He just knew it was the largest creature he’d ever seen in his life.

He used to sneak away from whatever droid was minding him while his mother worked. He didn’t remember how he first knew it was there, nor how he found his way back to the big pit that housed this vicious-looking monster. He couldn’t explain why, but he wasn’t afraid of it. He felt like he could talk to it with his mind, somehow, without the limitations of his meager vocabulary. In his mind, he told the creature he was a friend. That he was stuck here too, in a little room, unless he managed to escape his captor to go exploring – like he did today.

“Anakin! Get away from there!” His mother’s worried voice interrupted his communion with the beast. She scooped him up in her arms and hurried them away.

“Why?” That was his new favorite word.

“That’s a krayt dragon, Ani. They’re very dangerous,” his mother explained. “And you need to stay in your room.”

“Why, Mama?”

“Because you’re safe there. And we don’t want to make Gardulla mad.”

“Why?”

“That’s enough,” Shmi said crossly. Not making Gardulla the Hutt mad was very important for some reason; his mother often ended their conversations this way.

She set him down in The Room to amuse himself with his toys – pieces of scrap that no one else wanted – and sat on her bed, watching him, a pained expression on her face that he didn’t understand.

That was great :) I like this little part of Ani's young life and how he doesn't understand everything but just knows. And I love that his new favorite word "Why?" hehe

Thank you! Yeah, the "why" makes him more of a normal youngster :)

I still remember when my little sister said "why" all the time :)

Awww. Such a short but expressive little ficlet that nicely gives us a glimpse of Anakin first discovering a touch of his abilities as a kid. You write his young-child lack of intimidation really well, in a very believable way.

Nicely done!

*hearts* I love these sentences so much.

You know, this could fit seamlessly into the same universe of a fic by Fernwithy wherein Luke has a run in with a krayt dragon.

Thank you! Glad you like!

I don't think I've seen that fic. If you happen to have a link handy I'd love to read it though. Unless it's epically long, in which case I'd still read it but it would go on The List. Hehe

Oh you really should read them - they are actually 2 and they're short vignettes. They're classic.

Thank you! I just read those on my lunch at work :) They were lovely. Fits in nicely with ANH: now I know why Obi-Wan knows how to mimic a krayt dragon's call!

I can so see little Anakin asking, "Why?" about everything :D And this made me think - in his earliest formative years, authority was something irrational, just "don't make so-and-so mad because bad things will happen because they say so." I can understand on a visceral level why he had trouble with authority later after this.

I'm glad it made you think of something you maybe hadn't considered before! (as it did me, really) Thanks for reading :)
