Jun. 30th, 2006 07:48 amWhee, this week's
thefridayfive is about fandoms!
1.) What fandom do you center on most? STAR WARS. I grew up with the Original Trilogy, but I'm currently more into the Prequel Trilogy. All six movies are awesome. I'm dabbling a bit in EU but I have mixed feelings about that.
2.) Do you contribute to it much (write fanfiction, draw fanart, participate in online communities and discussions)? Somehow I don't think roleplaying in a crack community counts as a contribution? But that's what I do most often. I'm also in a few Star Wars communities on LJ. I've drawn a few things and written a few drabbles, but I don't really do anything with them except post them in my "creative" journal that no one sees.
3.) Do you think that such things are good or harmful to the fandom and why? I think they're good. People are expressing their love and interest in a fandom in a creative way. And yeah, it's fun to laugh at them *cough*
deleterius*cough* but how are they hurting anything? The people who don't want to read fanfic or look at fanart just don't. They don't have to. The ones who do should keep in mind the difference between canon and fanon.
Now as for whether it's good or harmful to me as a person? That's debatable. I admit that I'm quite unhealthily obsessed with Star Wars. I've spent far too many hours doing Star Wars-related things that I could have spent doing something productive. But you know, most of the time I don't care. It makes me happy. I'm probably happier than a good lot of people out there.
4.) Do you think its good or harmful for the original creator? It's definitely good. It keeps interest alive. And what people are interested in, they spend money on. If any idiots out there try to profit from their fanfics, like that one chick a couple months ago - Lucas's lawyers can squash them easily, and probably benefit from the press on top of it.
5.) Why do you like this fandom in particular? Ohhhhhhhh I get to babble about why I love Star Wars? YAY! Because it frickin' ROCKS. I didn't even appreciate how fully it rocked when I was little. I just liked playing with my little action figures (my bro and I severely warped canon back then with how SILLY we made everyone). But I grew up loving the movies and not really caring about when the prequels got made, I can't even remember when I heard they were doing that. I liked the happy ending of Return of the Jedi. I didn't really like the Empire Strikes Back so much when I was little; I suppose I couldn't appreciate the darkness of it. And Luke losing his hand freaked me out more than "I am your father."
But that's one great thing about Star Wars - it's timeless, and it can be enjoyed on different levels by kids and adults. (okay, so that's two things) The prequels are quite different from the originals... and honestly I can see how old school fans could be disgruntled. But it's all still Star Wars, and to me they just enhance the Original Trilogy all the more. I was never a big Vader fan until the prequels came out (and many in this fandom say the opposite!).
I think I'm just going to babble randomly now:
-The music is just amazing. I love the fact that all six movies have their own music but they all tie together too - it's fortunate that John Williams was able to do the score for all of them. I love the fact that hearing the music for the end of Revenge of the Sith can make me cry even if I'm not watching the movie (it's on my iPod)
-The story is classic. The bad dialogue is part of the charm, in my opinion - the emotions transcend it anyway.
-The universe George Lucas has created is so spectacular, so fantastic... (I want to live on Naboo, btw) it's no wonder it tempts the muses of thousands if not millions of creative people out there. It's the epitome of escape, watching these movies - and yet the characters feel real and easy to empathize with.
-I love how watching the Original Trilogy feels so different after watching the Prequel Trilogy. I always cry my eyes out at the end of Eps III and VI.
-Hayden Christensen is HAWT. (sorry, had to get that in there somewhere)
-Um... there's probably a lot more I could say that's more specific to the story but I've babbled long enough. Y'all get the idea by now, I think :)
That was not particularly eloquent babbling, but hey, I'm at work. I've already spent too long on this entry!

Date: 2009-04-03 03:43 am (UTC)You wouldn't know how to function in that humidity and with all that water around. You need to really live on Tatooine.

Date: 2009-04-03 04:41 pm (UTC)I was watching a History channel show about "How the Earth Was Made" that was about a place that gets even less rain that Arizona. Something like under an inch over a course of YEARS!
You need to move there to be on Tatooine.
