Jul. 16th, 2006 10:30 amI sound like a 15-year-old in my voiceposts, don't I? Sheesh. I say "like" and "ya know" far too many times.
I did two LJ entries this weekend that I couldn't post 'til now so I'm backdating them. I'll catch up with everyone in a little bit, after cleaning up cat puke and doing some laundry :)
It’s Sunday morning. I’m typing this entry on my laptop but of course, no internet up here. We have no phone, no TV, no internet - it’s quite blissful, really. I’m always a bit sad to leave the internet behind but I do believe it’s good to get away from it all, I mean REALLY get away from it all, from time to time. When I’m at home, I’m usually trying to do at least two or three things at once. And even if those things are fun or unimportant, it’s still a bit stressful on some level. Up here, I do one thing at a time.
My dad is retired. He comes up to this place to escape the heat in the Valley. He can’t be gone for longer than a week, though, because he takes care of his mother (she is going to be 96 next month, and still lives on her own! That’s going to be me someday, I hope. And, as I do work for a company that provides caregivers for those in need, I have suggested that they look into getting her set up for services through a government agency, but she doesn’t want any strangers coming into her home so for now, their arrangement is adequate) I just come up for occasional weekends, taking an extra day off work if I can - I probably wasn’t clear in my voice post yesterday that he was already up here, we drive separately. The heat doesn’t bother me nearly as much as it bothers him but I like to escape my daily life from time to time.
It’s so beautiful up here. It rained last night! Not for very long, but it sounded heavenly, pattering softly on the roof. I heard it rained down in the Valley too - I hope my house got some. I haven’t been watering enough. I always sleep so well up here. I left the windows open all night (you can’t open your windows at any time now down in Phoenix!) and I had to get under the blanket cuz it was a little chilly. Awesome! No cats pawing at my head to wake me up for food. I do miss them, but it’s really nice to get to truly sleep in for a change, ya know?
After lunch I’ll go sit outside on the deck and probably read for a while, then listen to the ballgame on the radio. I dozed off out there yesterday. It’s a small deck, just big enough for a card table with a couple chairs, and a lounge chair - my favorite place to read. I’m determined to read all the Harry Potter books again before Book 7 comes out (I’m on the 4th now), and I’m reading Dark Lord… which I’m finding difficult to read because of the time period. It’s just hard for me to see Vader suffering, and it’s so bleak with all the Jedi gone.
I made a omg!ls word search. Ha! I can’t get it to fit all on one page though, I think it would be easier in Excel - this laptop only has Works on it. I’m such a dork. Last summer I made a RotS word search. If anyone missed it I can email/AIM it to you if you want - or link to my post, but the scan is kinda crappy, it looks better as a spreadsheet.
I don’t feel like drawing anything right now. I could draw the Anakin wallpaper on here, or something out of my Star Wars Bible - but that’s all artwork so it’s not preferable to sketch. I could sketch the room I‘m in, I suppose, but I prefer to do people. My dad would kill me if I drew him. *snort*
We had an interesting conversation earlier over morning coffee and muffins (I actually eat three meals a day up here! What a novel concept). Somehow we got on the subject of his wild days in the Navy. It’s so amusing to me to hear my parents talk about their youth because they’re both so… SQUARE now. My ex used to say my parents were cordial, and I took offense at the time but now I think it’s pretty true.
I really enjoy the fact that I get along well with my dad now because growing up, I hated the man. “Hated” with all the passion of adolescence. [Holy shit - there are BIG ASS BLACK BIRDS outside. I mean, these things are bigger than most of my cats. Damn! Never saw those before.] Where was I… yeah. We fought like crazy. I started referring to him in my diaries by his first name instead of “Dad” and I had pretty much managed to convince myself I had another dad out there, that he wasn’t my real dad, no way could he possibly be or he wouldn’t hate me the way he did. Things got better when I moved out, but they didn’t really turn around until something happened in 1999, I think? Or 1998? that changed our relationship for the better. I’ll go into that another time. It’s kinda sappy :)
Oh - we do have a TV up here. But it’s only used to play ancient video games on. We get no reception at all, you have to have a satellite dish out here in the boonies to get any kind of TV stations, and it’s just not worth it to Dad (I agree - but then, I’m not up here all that often). We have our Atari 2600 and Atari 5200 here. Some of you probably don’t even know what those systems are. Heeee! I scoff at you and your youthful ignorance. I remember being absolutely blown away by seeing Pacman the arcade game in our local Dairy Queen, we’d go there for a treat sometimes and Dad would play it like once, I think, while we kids watched. I must have been about 6. I don’t think we got the Atari 2600 for a couple years after that - it was probably insanely expensive at first.
I love watching the Empire Strikes Back game, but I don’t really like playing it cuz I suck so bad. (My brother needs to come up and play it for me *cough*) The only thing I play is Ms. Pacman because I’m good at the 2600 version - it’s MEGA easy. Rather addictive, though. I like it because it doesn’t use the button - I play left-handed, and the button is on the left side of the joystick, so I have to reach around awkwardly with my right hand and it just doesn’t work that well. Controllers nowadays are much easier to work, even if they ARE so complex that I hit the wrong buttons all the time. Heh.
Almost lunchtime. Dad’s making a Western omelette - eggs with peppers, onions, cheese, and ham. Mmmm. He likes cooking. My brother kinda does too. My mom and I don’t. Stereotype busters, we are! But I do appreciate being cooked for. I’m such a little kid up here, doing whatever I want and getting served and stuff. I do the dishes sometimes but Dad shoos me away from that more often than not as well.
This is getting quite long. I better shut up and if I feel like writing more later I’ll make a new entry. I should write something creative while I’m in writing mode. Hmmmm...
