Rebel Scum.
Aug. 11th, 2006 08:40 amI'm a rebel - I'm not doing this week's
thefridayfive. A couple questions are very similar to ones already covered and one would be way too personal if I answered it honestly. Might get around to putting the story on my playground filter one of these days.
I got to work this morning and noticed there'd been a power surge last night. My computer was off and the clocks on the kitchen appliances were wrong. I started up my computer and NOTHING WORKED. Summoned the IT guy, who quickly pronounced it DEAD. He brought me a new hard drive and was able to get most of my icons back on there. I have to wait for our parent company's IT department to call me back for one very important one that's missing. *sigh* Such fun on a Friday morning! It wasn't just me - someone else's computer got fried too. Whew.
My boss, who is also the IT guy's boss, says I should be turning off my computer every night. The IT guy says no, just log out of the network, don't turn it off (which is what I've been doing for years). "Mom and Dad" need to agree! Which is better for the computer?
Oh, and apparently our air conditioner here got somewhat fried. It's 90 degrees in here. Good thing I don't mind it hot. Some people complain if it's like 74. Wusses.
Mountain trip tomorrow, yay! I'll be gone Saturday morning through Monday night. Maybe I'll do another dorky voicepost on my way out of town.
Happy Birthday to Ian McDiarmid! (Palpatine)
My inner-D! bubbled to the surface last night (not to be confused with IC!Palpatine). Remind me to tell you what I mean on AIM, I'm not posting it here. *snerkle*

Date: 2006-08-11 05:41 pm (UTC)You should turn your computer off, I think. It gives it a chance to rest.

Date: 2006-08-11 05:58 pm (UTC)I think I'll do that cuz I don't want the boss to yell if this happens again. I didn't have that computer very long, either. A couple years, maybe.

Date: 2006-08-11 06:03 pm (UTC)Good idea. Plus it keeps your data from being lost - and supposedly people can hack into your computer easier if it's on and connected, but I've no idea how true that really is. (I'd assume you're behind at least one firewall.)

Date: 2006-08-12 07:09 am (UTC)it wears out the computer and i forgot what it is but it's like if everyone turned off their computer at night it would save enough electricity to power Vegas for 10 years or something. oooh now i won't be able to sleep thinking of all those computers on!
