Happy Independence Day to my fellow Americans!

And how am I celebrating? By sitting around in my undies. Severe Heat Warning today = good excuse to stay inside.

I have a question that's probably too dumb to ask in the Star Wars community.
Vader to Luke in RotJ: "I see you have constructed a new lightsaber."
-Um... how the hell did he even know how to do that? Are we meant to infer that ghosty!Ben instructed him? Or that the Force itself instructed him? Or he's just so gifted in the Force that he figured it out on his own and knew where to get the materials? (didn't something happen to Ilum in the EU? Where would they get the crystals if not there?)

I think that we're supposed to believe that he went back to see Yoda after the disaster in the City of Clouds where he had more training and became a full Jedi before rescuing Han but I'm not entirely sure. That's just what I've always believed anyway :)

In earlier drafts and also in the novelization I think, Luke went back to Ben Kenobi's hut on Tatooine and found the instructions there.

Well, think about it this way....
Luke learned and changed a lot between ESB and ROTJ. AND that was only 6 months in their time. How did he learn anything he now knew??
I believe like the person above me said ^ that he learned from Obi Wan (Ben) and also going to his home on Tatooine and reading instructions. I've heard that he went to Tatooine and Meditated and really just studied for a few months all by himself. That's where he found the crystal to make his Light Saber.

Has no one read Shadows of the Empire?

The story there is that he went back to Ben's hut and constructed a lightsaber there, using a synthetic crystal. From what I remember, he was using the Force to guide him on the cutting of the crystal, but I'm not remembering where he got the instructions.

My guess was always the latter, that Luke was just OMGZOfucking cool he just knew how to do it.

I mean- who taught Vader how to build robots?
