We just (collectively) got in trouble again for abusing the internet. I'm still DYING to know if they really CAN trace it to the individual user, but I'm not dumb enough to ask my boss about it. As far as I know she thinks I'm an angel. Heh. I do clear my history every day, which should help, but ya never know these days.

So, radio silence on this end until the evenings. Boooooo! I'm gonna have to start bringing stuff to read on my lunch breaks again.

you may have read on my lj that they blocked personal emails at our work starting today. i ended up getting a data plan for my phone because i cannot stand it. i can check almost any site i frequent on my phone. but not LJ. LJ is a little wonky on the phone.

That sucks. That's cool you can get to it on your phone... we're not supposed to use cell phones at work either but whatever, I don't think they care as much about that as they do about us tying up the internet connection.

Well, if your company has the keystroke program, then they know where you go without checking your history. Of course, it would be a hassle to do it that way.

Keystroke? That sounds scary. They could figure out what WORDS I type? Ewwww!

Well, yes. It's a government standard program and it is installed in many college computers.

I would know if they installed it at work though, wouldn't I? Wouldn't it show up in "programs" or something?

>.> If you're retarded enough to put it on the individual computers then yes. However, most keystroke programs are hidden code programs. Unless you know the code password, you can't access the program.

One of the advantages of working for the computer illiterate! He can't do a THING for himself on the computer, even his own online SHOPPING, so we need unlimited access to EVERYTHNG because we never know what we might be asked to buy, find, research, etc!!

The big boss at my work is like that too. He can barely use his phone. But it's not him that watches, it's our parent company... they have a team of IT people, they probably get off on busting us!!

There are plenty of ways they can trace internet usage. I figure most places are set up to access internet through a web server. That way you can check for virus and malicious programs as they come in. If you have a unique login and one of these programs then yes, they can give individual user usage, including the websites they went to and how long they were on each page. Of course if you don't have a login, then they can only trace usage to an individual workstation, but if you use the same desk all the time, that's pretty much the same thing.

I have a unique login to my computer, I don't have to enter anything to get on the internet but... yeah, it's tied to me if they can check it that way. I thought you had to have Big Brother software on your computer to check that?

I've been in the bad habit of leaving my gmail open all day. But if it was JUST me, surely we wouldn't ALL get talked to about it... I've SEEN other people on it. So I know I'm not the only one. Just... maybe they're not dumb enough to leave the browser open all day!

No, it's not installed on your workstation. Your computer will connect to a server (probably) and this is where your internet comes from, the software to monitor internet usage will be on the server.

The one in my work logs every request (so everytime you click a link). I think gmail has a script to auto refresh, which would probably count as a click.

With Gmail though, I think your argument would be is just cause the browser is open you're not actually actively using it. This argument becomes much harder when you're actually going around websites and clicking different links.

I am totally prepared to admit I was leaving my gmail minimized all day. And it does do some kind of refreshing because it will pop up those messages without you going in there... yeah I was using it to reply to LJ, but I navigated away from there quickly so I don't think anyone could say "You were on livejournal FOR HOURS" if it came to that. Their focus still seems to be on "messaging programs" and MySpace - HA! I love it that LJ is still under the radar.

Gah. That sucks, Wendy. :( I don't have access from work either, unless I go through a secret proxy site. But accessing the site itself is no doubt traceable, even if whatever I access via it isn't. *shrugs* I dunno. I only ever use it for gmail if I do use it.

Damn gmail! It was too tempting to me to keep it open all day! Well, no more, I'ma be good now. (I've said this many times, and eventually I end up slacking again... I still kinda think that they'd talk to me about it individually first before firing me. I've been there 8 years and am a good employee, aside from this!)

My (ex) office has gone crazy with the internet rules lately. It's so annoying. IMO as long as it doesn't interfere with the job you do, what's the harm in being online a little during down time? Meh to offices and to rules.

We DO do random drug tests! Bwah! I've never had to do it, though. It's more something we do to our caregivers, not the office staff.

If I get hurt at work somehow or have an accident while driving somewhere for the company, though, I'll have to take one.

I always get my work done. And when I'm doing overtime I don't slack. I do understand why they don't want us on there, and I admit I've abused the heck out of it doing personal stuff on work hours. But that's... well, kinda the American way. There's some crazy stat now about "Black Monday" - the Monday after Thanksgiving where everyone shops at work. heh.

Glad you're out of your crap job even if the circumstances suck :\

Talking of reading, have you been reading the Legacy of the Force series?

From: [identity profile] lumy12.livejournal.com
No, I haven't read any of that, sorry! Maybe someday!

You really should, some excellent stuff in there.
I think after I read the last legacy book (out on May 20) I'll read through the Young Jedi Knights books.

Ugh, I keep forgetting to read Jedi Apprentice, I got like 2 in and haven't read any more in months (it's on my desktop computer so I have to remember to go over there. heh)

I finished those, and the Jedi Quest series, quite recently. Interesting reading, considering the kids books.
I have the "legacy of the jedi" books to read as well, although might wait until the series is complete before I tackle those.
