I wasn't going to bother posting my little concert synopsis this time, I know most of you aren't that into it, but I do actually like to look back on these at times, so this one's for me!
Radiohead was in town last Thursday the 15th. They are one of my brother's all-time favorite bands, and he was really bummed when he missed getting tickets right after they went on sale a few months ago. All he wanted for Christmas was to go to Radiohead. I did manage to get a single ticket, so I thought, cool, I'll just get 2 singles... I had a few issues purchasing that ticket but finally did, then when I went back to get another one, there were none available. Argh! So I gave him that one for Christmas and tried every single day for the past... 3 months or so? to get a second, and finally was able to get another one just 5 days before the concert. Whew! Thought I might have to pay scalper prices.
Went toChic FiletChick Fil-A (lol I never get that spelling right) first since we didn't have a ton of time and he wasn't hungry enough for a big meal. The cashier kid made a big deal about my name, which was kinda cute. He said that was his sister's name so he liked it. He asked if I knew where the name came from, and I said I'd heard it was from Peter Pan but didn't know if that was true, and he said yes, there's no Wendys in recorded history before Peter Pan so that's where it came from. I like to think that's true. We listened to "King of Limbs" on the way to the arena.
The concert was ticketless, which I'd never done before. No will call! You just go right to the gate with your ID and the credit card you bought with, they swipe your card and you get a stub with your seat on it. We had one (really good) seat and one floor. I explained why and the lady said "oh so you'll have to split time with the seat, here, I'll give you both floor wristbands" ...except really it was so mellow when we got there we both wanted to be on the floor because we got up pretty close! Like 30 feet back, in the center. And this was less than an hour before the show. I felt kinda bad that the seat went to waste but oh well, maybe someone moved down? And it was more fun to be together, of course.
The opening band was Other Lives, from Oklahoma. We heard the "Oklahoma" part but not the actual band name, so we speculated on that until the cool girl next to us piped up with the name (just before Jeremy texted it to me!) I'd never heard of them before, but they were really good and the crowd seemed to like them. Here's a link to some of their songs... oooo it's a myspace link! Old school! They played for a half hour and I wanted moooooooooore.
Radiohead came on about 45 minutes later. The crowd was so laid-back (i.e. stoned? Only smelled that overwhelming icky pot stench twice!) there wasn't even any pushing so we didn't move up very much at all, but we were close enough. They played for about 2 hours. Here's the set list, a couple pics, and a vid. Mostly new stuff, and nothing from before "Ok Computer." I would have loved to hear more from "The Bends" but they said they're all about moving forward... okay cool, but Computer is really old too, the Bends is only a smidge older? Not that I'm complaining because EVERYTHING they did was awesome. I couldn't sing along with a lot of it because I don't know most of the lyrics... Radiohead has always been more about the tone/mood of their music than the lyrics anyway, to me. The floating flatscreens were cool, because I couldn't see Thom most of the time when he was in the center. I usually complain I'm too tall but that's not the case at concerts! He was really energetic; I always appreciate that. I loved what they did with the lights, which you can see a little in the vid. There weren't any lasers, just different colors used for different songs... it had a nice flow to it.
I'd already seen a set list from another show, so I knew what to expect. My brother didn't want to know anything, he's better about avoiding spoilers than me... and he pointed out that they do change it up from place to place... they did this time! They did "Pyramid song" which my bro especially liked, and the crowd did too -- afterwards Thom said "we should do that one more often!" Yup, not on the list that I saw. And then! First encore song was my FAVORITE RADIOHEAD SONG WHICH I FIGURED THEY PRETTY MUCH WOULD NEVER DO IN CONCERT! ("How To Disappear Completely") I had whined to my brother earlier that there was no way they would do that one... he actually recognized it before I did and punched my arm. Then I shrieked and got all excited. Ahhhhhhhh that was awesome, definitely my favorite moment in the concert. I took a crappy vid on my camera phone, about 6 of those actually, but they didn't come out well at all so I'll spare you :P
We didn't hang out after to try to meet anyone, I had to work in the morning and he wasn't in the mood to wait around another hour or so for that so we left, listening to "Ok Computer" on the way home. As usual I was dying of thirst but it was worth it because I didn't have to go to the bathroom! (priorities!)

Date: 2012-03-19 02:09 am (UTC)Ha!! That's a funny Keith story! They did that song just a couple years ago? That's cool, I might have expected it earlier on before they had zillions of hits. We saw STP back in the 90s, possibly more than once but I don't remember for sure (my bro would be annoyed at my CRS disease here >.>)... I went to more concerts back in those days.
The one person who I think might get the e-cookie isn't on LJ much anymore, sadly! I'll give you a late one though if you happen to have a "ohhh!" moment at some point in the future, though by then you may have forgotten all about it?

Date: 2012-03-19 03:28 am (UTC)From what I've read, Wendy was first used in Peter Pan as a girl's first name but prior to that it existed as a surname and possibly still does.
What do you mean you're too tall? Too tall for what?
no subject
Date: 2012-03-19 03:51 am (UTC)A surname?? Never heard that one! Interesting!
Just too tall in general. Taller than average for a girl. I'm a bit self-conscious about it. Not even model-tall or anything but I'm taller than most girls I know and I tend to wish I were a couple inches shorter because smaller = cuter :D

Date: 2012-03-19 07:05 am (UTC)But now I really want to know: how tall are you exactly?
Also, don't wish to be smaller! Being cute is NOT a good thing if you want to be taken seriously in the working world. A lot of people (not just men) talk down upon you - and I don't mean that just in the literal sense.

Date: 2012-03-19 01:58 pm (UTC)Its technically not short for anything but a different spelling.

Date: 2012-03-20 03:00 am (UTC)That's silly. Like height is a measure of intelligence or competence? Psh. I guess it goes along with the "cute" label though. Eh, I get taken seriously enough by the people that matter :)

Date: 2012-03-19 01:52 pm (UTC)I don't see why you'd want to be shorter, I hate being a short-arse. But then everyone wants what they don't have.
But I'm also pretty strong so I can always be a Pint-Size Power House (which is a trope). Like Yoda.

Date: 2012-03-20 03:03 am (UTC)Yup! Like how I also wish I had straight hair! (and yeah, I can HAVE straight hair, if I spend a zillion hours in front of the mirror with a flatiron every day, no thanks!)
Haha, I'll refrain from calling you Yoda and saying "size matters not!" (Ohhh I do have a Yoda icon on this account, it's just a NaNo one!)

My dear, you KNEW I would have to say something about this! Wendy has a few possible origins. First, the Welsh name Gwendydd (pronounce Gwen-dee, "white day") is a plausible first usage of the name and is the name of Merlin's sister. Wendi is also the surname of two emperors in China during the Han Dynasty and the Sui Dynasty.
However, your young friend is right in a way. The name Wendy became popular because of J.M. Barrie. Barrie "created" the name based on his friend Margaret Henley. She pronounced her "r" as "w" so she commonly called friends as "fwendies" (friendy). Since she was such a childhood fwendy-wendy
don't be judging little kids..., he based his female lead on her and called her Wendy. So, while the name Wendy have been used prior to Barrie, the name only became popular because Peter Pan and most people know that origin story of Wendy that way.
So... you can choose which origin story you prefer. :P

Date: 2012-03-20 03:10 am (UTC)Okay, you guys are tall, but I'm one of the tallest people at work and that's where I spend most of my time! I'm not THE tallest. LOL @ "twisted thoughts" - like it's a sinister thing! Maybe I want a good excuse to wear flats? I always marvel at tall people (like models) wearing heels to make them even taller. WHYYYY.
Yes indeedy! Will look for you to say hi!
