CYOA Page 2
Sep. 15th, 2013 06:30 pmYou place your hands on his cheeks and pull him in for a sweet kiss. He doesn't protest, even when you slip your tongue between his lips; the intrusion is welcome, obviously, or it wouldn't have been so easy. So much for "NO FOOLING AROUND OUT THERE", you think gleefully.
Joel seems to hear this thought, though, and pulls back all too soon. "Not now," he says gruffly, with just a hint of a smile.
"But no one can see us out here," you argue good-naturedly; you know he's right, but sometimes it's fun to argue with him anyway. You're not sure why.
"Don't matter. We're too exposed here. An' the sooner we find our man, the sooner we get back home," he says sensibly.
"Okay, fine. I get it. You just don't wanna kiss me. The thrill is gone," you lament with mock sadness.
Joel chuckles (and is there anything sweeter than making him laugh?!). "Where'd you hear that expression?"
"Who cares -- you're not denying it!" you accuse him, pulling out the poutiest, most wounded expression in your arsenal.
Unfortunately, it's wasted on Joel this time; he's already turned back to the horse and mounted up. "Come on, let's get movin'."
You're irritated at his refusal to placate you (ideally with more kisses, though nice words would've sufficed), but you know that he knows it's not necessary; if he's not in the mood to play along, so be it. You can be mature about it. Sometimes you kind of miss those early days... when he would've thought that you were joking-yet-kinda-serious with remarks like that, and he'd be so sweet in his reassurances.
Maybe it's more that he's being Outside-Joel, rather than simply not in the mood? you muse to yourself as you mount your own horse and fall in step beside his. There is definitely a difference. The time in Jackson has softened him up some, although he still won't leave the house without a gun. And you are only allowed to forgo your gun if you're together. ...'allowed' being perhaps not the best term for it, because you don't need to ask his permission for anything, per se, but you love him, so you'll do just about anything to make him happy. Besides, he has made you somewhat paranoid, and you don't really feel safe without one or both of you having a gun on you at all times. You like to blame him for that... but maybe the horrors suffered on the road from Boston are truly to blame?
A few minutes later, when you hear a rustling noise behind you, your first instinct is that you're being followed... but when you turn around and see no one, you wonder if it's just that paranoia acting up again. You were just thinking about being paranoid, after all! You glance at Joel... and he doesn't seem at all disturbed. Obviously it's just the wind, then, right? Or a bird or something? Cuz Joel would've heard it if it was something else... something sinister.
It's a creepy feeling, being followed. You don't hear another sound, but you turn around anyway, because you can't shake the feeling. It would be easy enough for someone to follow along behind the trees and big rocks in this area, with plenty of bushes and stuff to duck behind as needed to avoid detection whenever you turn around...
Still, if Joel isn't alarmed by it... except maybe Joel is rusty, too?
If you decide you're just being paranoid and it's nothing to be concerned about, turn to page 4.
If you tell Joel about your suspicions of being followed, turn to page 6.
