You're not in desperate need of water, so you decide it's better to go the shorter route.

You happen upon something that appears to be a huge barn. You and Joel both decide this is a good spot to stop and rest the horses for a short while. Have some lunch, relax a little... 'relax' being a relative term, as you're both still a bit on edge. Even with Joel's practically-a-sixth-sense ability to detect the presence of others, humans can be sneaky sometimes... and it is possible for Joel to be wrong.

He's not wrong this time, and you finish your lunch in peace. The horses, picketed behind the barn, are still grazing contentedly. While Joel takes a... well, "call of nature" break, you use your binoculars to check out the path ahead. Before the break, you'd noted that there was some kind of road ahead -- Joel guessed the highway, but you couldn't tell from here -- with buildings dotting either side... maybe a little town. Unoccupied, naturally. Most likely. Except...

You scramble up this rocky hill, only a ten-second sprint away, to get a better look... and you do see some movement through the binoculars. Are those runners? ...yes, those are definitely infected. You count six of them milling about in plain sight; who knows how many are in the buildings or otherwise obscured from your vision.

That rocky hill thing runs along your side of the road (the south side); you could move through it just fine on foot but it's definitely too steep for horseback, so to avoid the infected, you'd have to double back and go around it on the other side... or maybe circle around the little town on the right, in a wide enough arc to avoid detection.

But maybe you don't want to avoid them. You might want to come back through this way on the return trip. There might not be that many of them. You and Joel can handle, like... a lot of infected. There's no moral dilemma here, like there could be with non-infected humans: the fuckers aren't human anymore. They have no quality of life... the only good to come from leaving them alone would be the ammo and effort thus conserved.

And possibly conserving our lives, you have to admit.

You could ask Joel for his opinion... but you kind of like that he's willing to let you decide stuff now. At least he did that one time... whatever! I can get him to do whatever I want anyway! you think with amusement.

If you decide to fight the infected, turn to page 9.

If you decide to flee, turn to page 13.
