Page Fifty-Five

You figure you have just enough time to run down the hill the rest of the way and veer off to your left before the infected will be on top of you... and you are correct! With a mess of Runners and Clickers behind you, you sprint down the street and don't look back. You do run faster than most infected that you've encountered; the only problem being that once you stop to pull out a bomb or reload your gun, they'll be right there on your ass.

...Okay, so it's not the ONLY problem... there's also the ones running for you from another direction! There are three Runners across the street, ahead of you, and if you keep going straight, they'll overtake you. You do hear explosions and gunfire behind you, so you know that, as expected, Joel is on it.

You make a sharp turn left, between two store buildings. The hill-mountain thing is too steep to climb here. You find a window -- or rather, a window hole without a window? -- on the side of the building on your left and tumble through it, hoping they didn't see where you went. You're in what appears to be some kind of furniture store... what else would have tables and stuffed chairs and sofas all over? You duck behind one of the sofas, hidden from view of the window you came through and the front. A couple of Runners are climbing through the window, but they didn't see where you went. There's a little marble-y statue thing on the ground next to you; it probably had once decorated one of the tables. You grab it and rise just enough to chuck the thing over the sofa, toward the front wall. It crashes through the large front window, drawing the attention of infected both inside and out. You're glad to see some Clickers climbing through to investigate.

The distraction gives you enough time to retrieve an already-prepared Molotov cocktail from your backpack that you just need to light -- and it gathers as many infected as you can possibly group together at this time. You quickly light the Molotov and aim for the center-most infected, and...

WHOOSH! It was probably the best use of a Molotov cocktail that you've ever made. You watch as Runners and Clickers alike stumble through the flames, catching each other on fire like some kind of freakish relay. The screaming and the stench of burning flesh is awful, yet you watch with fascination, finally able to catch your breath. It seems that only two have managed to avoid your Molotov's wrath and whatever death Joel's been offering them outside... and they can see you now!

But your gun is locked and loaded. You use a total of five bullets to kill them both (maybe you ought to carry one of Joel's more powerful guns to speed up that process! but you do love the familiarity of this "more-your-size" pistol). You check the fallen Runners' pockets; so many people carry around extra ammo that it's not uncommon to find it still in their pockets after they turn. One of them even has a gun tucked into his pants, like how you wore yours before Joel got you the holster belt (and, let's face it, you still wear it that way sometimes when you don't feel like fussing with the holster). You wonder how the fuck the gun managed to stay in the guy's pants like--

"Ellie!"

"In here, Joel!" You stand up, taking the gun so Joel can check it out and see if it's any good; you two don't really need any more guns, but someone back home might. You start walking back to the window you came through-- but holy shit, you didn't realize that it's not just the infected bodies burning; the fire has spread to the curtains by the windows, to the couches and tables and chairs the infected had stumbled into... there's fire everywhere!

"Are you okay? Where are you!"

"In the back!"

"I'm comin' in there--"

"No! No no no, I can get out! Don't come in!" You hear that Joel's in the front, but you can't see him through all the smoke -- how the fuck did the smoke get so THICK in here? The fire seems to be growing pretty fucking fast. You need to figure out how to get out! The last thing you want is Joel coming in after you; you know he'd burn himself to a crisp to save you.

The window you climbed through is still an option; its curtains are on fire, but if you lunge through that space, it wouldn't even have a chance to jump over to you, would it? There are no other windows you can get to, and the front door is out. There's quite a bit of space behind you, but you don't see a back door... maybe there's one through the interior door that probably goes to an office or something...

Your eyes and throat are stinging from the smoke, and you're starting to feel lightheaded. Hurry!

If you climb through the window, turn to page 106.

If you look for a back door, turn to page 110.
