CYOA Page 61
Sep. 14th, 2013 01:00 pmYou kind of can't stand not knowing where Joel is or if he's in trouble. You hurry to the other end of the tunnel, to the last place you saw Joel. He made a right turn, and then...
You proceed cautiously around that corner and keep your 9-millimeter ready for action, pointing ahead. You're glad to see the rain is starting to die down now. You can even see a patch of blue sky to the east. ...I'll be even happier when I see Joel... "Joel?" you call out.
"Ellie!"
Shit -- you can hear him but you can't see him, and something about the way he said your name scares you... like it was a big effort or something. "Joel, where are you!" you holler, hurrying in the general direction -- forward. Along the rocky surface to your right, you see signs of human life in a hollowed-out or alcove-like section -- rags, water bottles, boxes of ammo... no guns... or people... or dead bodies...
"Here!"
It's more of a grunt than anything else... and it's coming from your left. You realize with horror that just beyond the railing is a huuuuuuuuuge drop. No... tell me he's not... !!!
But he is-- oh my God! Joel! You gasp when you find Joel hanging on to a rock for dear life. He's just dangling there, his feet scratching at the dirt, trying to find purchase. How the fuck did he end up like that?! You scramble to reach down to him... but you can't get near enough! "Can you reach my hand?" you cry anyway, reaching with all your might, in case by sheer will alone--
"The rifle -- but get behind -- that --"
You understand what he wants you to do -- extend the rifle while bracing yourself against a large rock -- but you don't think it will work. "It won't be long enough! I'll go get the rope!"
"No! No time! I can't -- hold on --"
His face is bright red, and you think the rivulets streaming down his forehead are probably more sweat than rain. He's clearly exhausting every ounce of strength he has just to hold on to that fucking rock jutting out of the cliff. Can he do it for just one more minute so you can get some rope?
A fresh wave of horror washes over you as your gaze goes all the way to the bottom... to a body that's no more than a speck -- the body of that third guy, maybe? It's so FAR down there -- Joel would never survive the fall!
What should you do?!
If you lower the rifle and hope that Joel can reach it, turn to page 108.
If you run back to your horse to fetch the rope, turn to page 114.
