OMGGGGGGGG
Dec. 19th, 2019 09:53 pmThat's all I wanted to say about The Rise of Skywalker for now... mostly cuz I have to go to bed.
GO SEE IT!
ETA: Okay, so I am the only fan on the internet who liked it. I'll turn in my SW nerd card and happily embrace the SW plebs.

Date: 2019-12-21 03:00 am (UTC)People have a right to feel however they feel. If this movie didn't do it for them, so be it ("JEDI"... ahahaha *ahem*). I personally don't look at it with the same scrutiny that others do. SW is supposed to be FUN. And this movie definitely was that. I don't understand the criticism of "the plot was all over the place" - ??? Uh... no it wasn't?
Shutting up now, just talking to myself for the record I guess :)

Date: 2019-12-21 04:16 pm (UTC)I didn't like what they've done with Palpatine in regards changing an aspect of his character which may imply other changes. I'm very particular about Palpy. I had set up a spoiler cut, but it's refusing to work here. I plan to post more in my journal to explain more of why this movie and the entire trilogy just wasn't doing it for me.

Date: 2019-12-21 07:11 pm (UTC)I was just thrilled to see him again, squeeing like a fangirl at the RotS line (which sure sounded like it came directly from the movie) about his undead status... though I've always preferred prequel Palps to the Emperor. He's brilliant, whereas the Emperor comes off as more of a cackling old fool to me. We always knew he wouldn't win in the end, of course, because it's Star Wars and the good guys have to win -- the bad guys can win in fanfic, that's what it's for -- and I loved Rey and Ben facing him together, with ultimately Rey being the one to bring him down as this trilogy is "hers" as much as the OT is Luke's and the PT is Anakin's.
I'd be very interested to read your thoughts on him!
spoiler warning
Date: 2019-12-21 08:17 pm (UTC)It was the Prequels where truly learned to appreciate him. I was a kid seeing original trilogy and thought Vader was the ultimate, so I was like, why is he kneeling to this old geezer? Just off the old man. Creepy as hell in ROTJ. But after seeing him in the Prequels, I go back and I really like him there , too. Even in the Clone Wars he's awesome.
OMG, watching the Phantom Menace in the theater, I was like, what, wait, what was that Senator's name? Seriously, Palpatine? And he's the evil Sith dude in the robes, too. OMG, it's the evil Emperor before he was the Evil Emperor!
Well, I'm concerned that they're going to change stuff about him. Now he's got a grand kid? While it is now considered "legands" the book Darth Plagueis establishes him as ace. No interest in women, or presumably any sex partner, which is pretty much in line with most Sith who are completely focused on the Dark Side of the Force and whatever will bring them power. And I don't see him as letting his family rope him into an arranged marriage either. It's not so much that I care if he is ace or not, it's what else are they going to change about him? Will they bring back the awful clone scenario that was so popular in the EU a few years back?
Even though I got the book when it first came out, I read it only a few months ago, because I didn't want anything fundamental changed about him and I thought there should be a lot of mystery of exactly where he came from and why he is a Sith.. But the book turned out to be great.
I do prefer to think that Anakin and Luke's story to stand as it is, and I'm kind of tired of Sith being around after ROTJ in general. One youtuber was theorizing that it was Son of the Celestials whom Rey was going to fight in this movie, and that would have been great, especially if she was a Skywalker, which it looked like she was going to be.
RE: spoiler warning
Date: 2019-12-21 09:07 pm (UTC)Hehe, I think I had similar thoughts as a kid, wondering why Vader isn't the head honcho and this ancient dude is. The prequels gave me new respect for him.
I imagine that eventually they'll do a book or comic series that goes into how Palps became a daddy. I hope it was a very calculated, mechanical process. I wonder what happened with his son, if Palpatine wanted to bring him to power or if he was like the SW equivalent of a squib or what. What made him focus on his grandchild instead of his child? If Rey's parents chose to be nobodies, would Palps let them live solely with the hope of snatching their child?
I never wanted her to be a Skywalker, but was resigned to the fact that she probably would be (esp. with JJ Abrams back for this one). I don't know if you read what the very end of the movie is... but I was happy with it. I love the "we can choose who we consider family" theme in general.

Date: 2020-01-02 02:10 am (UTC)Anyway, I am going to go back to appreciate the parts of SW I love. I will say this: anytime a Sequel movie came out it inspired me to get back to writing my fan fic. LOL
