Page Two Hundred Thirty-Six

Shooting an unsuspecting victim in the back -- someone who hasn't even hurt you or really even directly threatened you -- just feels... backstabby. (...backshooty?) Even if the victims are just shitty hunters. You're not that cold. (...yet?) If they spot Joel, though... well, killing them in Joel-defense is just as reasonable as self-defense, in your opinion. You follow them through the 'backyard' of this... warehouse? It's a huge, plain-as-fuck building.

Jasper finally remembers that you're there and that you have a gun. He suddenly turns and glares -- first at you, then his buddy. "Hey, dumbass: why haven't you lifted that gun off her yet?"

"Why haven't you, motherfucker?" Nick tosses back. It feels like playful guy-banter. Like how you call your friends bitches. But do hunters do that? Maybe it's real.

"I already have a gun, genius," says Jasper.

I CAN'T let them take my gun-- but by the time you whip it out of your holster, Nick is grabbing your arm and trying to wrest it from you. "I'll shoot your fucking foot!" you warn him. Or my OWN fucking foot if I can't move this hand up just a--

Jasper sighs and whacks your head with the butt of his rifle, which effectively makes you lose your grip on the gun (and fall on your ass). You vaguely hear Jasper giving Nick more shit as they leave you in the dust, so to speak, but mostly what you hear is a very loud ringing. Like... the sound of OWWWW THAT FUCKING HURT. It didn't knock you out, though. When your vision clears, you get to your feet and try to catch up to them, but the white-hot pain arrests your movement entirely. Okay... gotta push... through it... ...You still... have your knife, you try to pep-talk yourself. If those fuckers hurt Joel... when you could have killed them... !!!

You chant Joel's name silently with every step. Somehow, it helps. But how are you ever going to catch up to them?

You see them going around the front, so you're not going to bother trying to find entry through the back. By the time you reach a window to climb through, they have long since vanished into the vast rows of boxes filling the ginormous room. Computer parts litter the area (and you only know what they are because some of the boxes have pictures on them).

Man, it's like a maze in here... either the pain in your head is less severe or you've become accustomed to it, because you're moving more easily now. It's eerily quiet; the guys aren't even talking to each other. You hope Joel is waiting in the shadows somewhere, ready to pounce.

You spot Nick -- yes! Clear shot! And what the fuck, Ellie... stealth kills are ALWAYS on unsuspecting victims, aren't they? You should've just shot them before! With your blade in hand, you creep up behind him. Almost there... it's risky, because unfortunately, you can't always kill silently, the way Joel does. You or Nick will likely make enough noise to attract someone's attention. But it appears he and Jasper have split up, and you don't see anyone else around, so you like your chances.

But then--

"Oh, what the fuck," says Nick, stopping in his tracks. "Jas! Mel's dead!"

Too late, you realize he's turning to the side -- enough to see you. You and your knife. "You--"

"Nick! Down!" calls a voice from across the room -- Jasper's, you think. The call is swallowed by the piercing sound of a bullet -- flying in your direction... but you don't realize it in time. Nick drops to the floor in front of you--

--but of his own accord. You, on the other hand...

Well, you never actually saw the bullet hit you in the forehead. It hurt way less than the rifle smack -- as in, not at all. Which is kind of strange, since you died. If you had known you were about to die, you would have chosen a much more meaningful last thought than "I think that's Jasper." Still, not a bad way to go; you can't complain. (also, you can't complain. Ha) You just... keeled over. You also didn't see Nick and Jasper die, since that happened immediately after your death.

And, perhaps the most merciful part of your death: you were spared the abject horror and sorrow of witnessing the look on Joel's face (poor Joel; he didn't even know you were there) when he realized that not only are you dead, but it was his shot that killed you.

THE END

Oh, wow... I chose the right one before, but as I going to read them all... well. You make Joel kill her... you're evil!

Yeah poor Joel, I don't think he lived long after this.
