Writing meme = more fun than actual work!
Mar. 4th, 2008 11:40 amAs I was skimming through my fic to do this meme, I noticed that it's been exactly 2 years since I posted my first fic to this journal on 3/4/06. Yay!
I was a little brief in places but I'd be happy to expand on anything y'all are curious about.
1. How about a brief introduction?
I’m Wendy, or Lumy. I’m 33, and until recently felt I was “too old for all this” and that my participation in any sort of fandom activities rendered me immature. But you know what? …I’m immature for plenty of reasons other than that. Ha! No, really – fandom is a lifelong thing, and I’m pleased to have found other “oldies” like me enjoying it every bit as much, if not more so, than the teens writing the Suefic.
The only fandom I’ve written for of late is Star Wars. I read selected things from other fandoms but am not bold enough to write for them, at least not yet.
2. What got you into fan fiction (and/or adopting muses)?
As others have said, I wrote fanfic before I knew what it was. I used to write godawful stories wherein I pulled my favorite characters from my soap opera and put them in my school environment. I just loved the characters so much, I wanted to incorporate them into my real life as best I could. I got a bit carried away with this, but I’ll spare you the crazy!Wendy tales from my youth. I used to tell myself stories when I lay in bed at night before falling asleep, but most of those didn’t make it to paper. I actually only recently stopped falling asleep this way (recently meaning just a few years ago)…not sure what that says about me. Anyway, I mean to eventually go through my boxes of old stuff and find any offensive fic that remains and BURN IT. There’s one story in particular that I was very proud of, I put it in a binder and everything… but remembering it now, I know it was just a horrible suefic that needs to die. In a fire. Heh. Oh, I used to write poetry, too – for my real life and also for characters I really felt for in shows/movies I liked. I don’t want to burn this, even though I know some of it is quite bad.
I was introduced to online roleplaying about ten years ago, and I loved it. Quickly got waaaay too addicted. So addicted that when things went south in my game, I swore off the internet long enough to get over it – and I never went back there. Didn’t “rediscover” RP until a few months after I joined LJ. Then I discovered fic communities and decided to read, not write… but then I wanted to write and voila, I’m writing again!
3. What kind of fan fiction do you write?
Het, gen, slash. Short pieces. Writing anything longer than 1000 words is difficult for me.
4. Do you write for the same pairings/characters?
Lately, yes. I blame that on having an Anakin claim at
fanfic50.
5. What is your most popular fic/muse and why do you think people like it so?
Fic: Strangely enough, going by comments alone, "Healthy Libido" is the most popular. But that may be because it ended up getting linked to in various places. I’m pleasantly surprised at the reception "Monster" is getting. I actually didn’t expect people to really go for that one.
6. Forget other people, what is the fanfic/post/prompt you've written that you're most proud of?
Fic: It’s a bit silly but I like "Fresh Meat" because OMG I used 13 90s one-hit wonders in there! And the focus was someone I’d never written before.
7. Do you find writing easy? Hard? What aspects do you struggle with?
If it was easy, everyone would do it. I struggle with everything! Coming up with ideas and translating my brain scramblies to words, keeping characters in character and believable… and I suck at plot, which is why I can’t write anything long.
8. Write a few sentences of your favorite pairing or character.
No. I don’t wanna :P
9. Are there any fanfiction trends/clichés you hate?
Actually, nothing comes to mind. I like clichés. >.>
10. Are you guilty of any of the trends you hate?
See above.
11. What was the first fandom you wrote for? Do you still write for it?
Days of Our Lives. But I never posted any of the tripe I wrote, nor will I. See #2. No, I don’t write for it anymore, though I’ve thought about it.
12. Name your OTPs and explain what it is about them you love to write.
I am that rare breed, the Anakin/Palpatine shipper. I love their dynamic. I love writing a Palpatine that never planned to actually CARE about this boy he planned to manipulate to fit into his evil plans. And it’s so natural for Anakin to turn to him, when Obi-Wan does nothing but criticize and Padme just doesn’t understand.
13. What would you call your writing style?
O.o I have no idea. Short? Oh – Michele called it “crisp.” I think that sounds nicer than short. Heh.
14. Do you read other people's writing? If so, what do you find yourself reading the most?
Of course! I read waaaaay more than I write.
Um… well, I tend to re-read Deborah’s “The Lover’s Wine” over and over. Hehe. There is a severe shortage of Ani/Palpy fic in the fandom. Just yesterday someone said as much to me, and asked me to write more. Awwww! I love that someone likes my stuff enough to ask me that.
15. Name one thing you'd love to write but have been too afraid or too shy to do.
Palpatine/Plagueis. I’m content to let Michele tackle that one instead. Hehe. Maybe I will try it eventually.
16. Do you feel uncomfortable taking criticism? Or worse, do you have the dreaded bloated ego?
I would take it much better now than when I first started posting on this journal. Especially if it came from someone who I know enjoys my writing. Bloated ego? HA! Deflated, more like.
17. When you write, is there anything that helps?
Time of day, if that counts. Heh. I’m a morning person. Which is why sometimes fic gets written at work.
18. What inspires you?
Inspires me to write? Well, my love for the source material itself, I suppose… but also feedback from people who actually like what I write. (will I ever get used to that? I kinda hope not. Heh) If I read something I try to at least leave a “hey I enjoyed this” type of comment at minimum, because I know how much I appreciate such comments. Yes, I would still write what I want if everyone hated it, because I’m doing it for me. But I have a feeling I’d write a lot less frequently. And like others, I do write plenty that won’t ever see the light of day. Or if I do post it, it’s not public >.>
19. Lastly, how would you sum up your fan fiction/RP experiences and you as a writer?
-Fanfic writing has been mostly positive. Though I’ll say this – I’ve learned my lesson about offering to pinch-hit in ficathons. Nope, never doin’ that again!
-RP has been… hmmm. A mixture. I’m quite undecided on it at the moment. I’m enjoying the absolute control that writing fic allows.
-I still say I’m not a “real” writer, or a “real” artist. It depends on your definition, though. I’m a wuss and I hide behind such disclaimers so I have an excuse to suck at things!
20. Tag some friends, because they'll hate you for it.
That’s mean.
I should organize this journal a little better. Add some tags. Add a linkable "why I can't stand Ani/Obi" post even though Jax already found the answer :P But I've slacked at work enough for the day!

Date: 2008-03-06 02:35 am (UTC)And yes, your style IS 'crisp'. There's an immediacy to it that comes across as also incredibly heartfelt. So 'crisp' is the closest descriptor I can think of to convey that (at least in my jumbled brain; heh).

Date: 2008-03-08 02:23 pm (UTC)If I don't burn my old stuff... perhaps I should spork it. Hehe, I've seen people do that. But I don't want this tripe living on after I die!!!
And I like the father/son dynamic too - it just doesn't come out in my fics because I'm a pervert. lol
Thanks for your praise :) and I'll do the Ani/Obi thing soon. ♥

Date: 2008-03-09 03:53 pm (UTC)You "talk" yourself to sleep with stories? Yay! I don't do it anymore, though - not sure why I stopped. I think mostly because in recent years it rarely takes me more than 10 minutes to fall asleep.
I want to go find the story I'm thinking of because if it doesn't burn my eyes, I'd love to read it one last time before it meets its death in a fire. *snicker* Maybe I could just put some note on it, with the current date, explaining that I know how awful it is now but I was a silly little girl when I wrote it. (maybe not so little, but whatever. It was over half my lifetime ago so I think I can call myself little anyway. Hee!)
ETA: here (http://luminations.livejournal.com/22684.html) you go. I'm going to add the link to my userinfo so I can refer people to it when they ask me where this hatred comes from! Hehe.

Date: 2008-03-10 01:34 am (UTC)Yeah, I didn't mean out loud - that would be noisy. Hehe. That's too bad that it goes away overnight! We're probably deprived of some really great Kitster stories as a result, aren't we?
I'm glad you join in my Ani/Obi hatin'. *hugs*
And please, steal away! Spread the Ani/Palpy love! (I thought you'd like this one since it's not slashy ^_^)

Date: 2008-03-10 02:52 pm (UTC)And the composition and coloring of that other icon is exactly why I like it too. I have so much room for more iconage though, I need to get off my lazy behind and upload some more. You had some nice ones a little while back, if I remember correctly.
We must bond together in the Ani/Obi hatin'! Even though it's for completely different reasons, our unity shall... um... give us strength and focus and... blah blah blah. Stuff. Yeah. *giggle* I'm silly.

Date: 2008-03-11 12:46 am (UTC)I almost always have available icon space. *hides!* But that's because I like to delete icons in large quantities so I don't have to deal with it again for a few months when it fills up.
Our anger WILL give us focus! Oh yes! *dons pervy voice* I can feeeeeeeeeeel your angahhhhh...
and it's turning me on like whoa!Ahem. Yes. I hope a new Palpy icon finds its way into your stash soon!

Date: 2008-03-11 01:41 am (UTC)I'm kinda weird about icons like that too. Usually I have to be in an "icon shopping" mood and go sniff around for them. Something that might not have caught my eye the first time I saw it will appeal to me when I'm in that mood.
