Mayhem!

Went to the baseball game last night - I of course was tired from my late night the night before, but A. really wanted to see Clemens pitch, and I hadn't been to a game since May (my poor boys are so neglected by me this year!), so what the heck.

The game itself was pretty good, even though we lost (A. was happy, being a Padres fan and thus securing first place for his team in our weak division).  But the real story comes after we leave the ballpark.

Walking outside, we are greeted by sheets of rain just pounding down.  This is always big news for us desert-dwellers.... however, being the monsoon, it was not entirely unexpected.  (for those of you not in the know, you can click here to learn more about monsoons and see cool lightning pics)  We had to walk maybe a quarter-mile to our parking lot.  We were soaked within seconds.  I mean, through-to-your-undies soaked.  I do own an umbrella, but I wasn't about to bring it with me into the ballpark!  What's worse is my purse I'm using now isn't really a purse, it's a canvas totebag, and the small pocket I had put my car keys in inside it no longer held the car keys - I had to root around in there to find the keys and my purse's contents got drenched.  Why didn't I take my iPod out before going to the game???

Every stroke of lightning and clap of thunder filled us with awe.... but as we entered our parking lot we heard a loud crack that was not thunder, it was the streetlamp blowing up.  A. got a little freaked out then (I was still awe-struck), he was like "If the power lines come down we're not getting in the car!"  It wasn't THAT bad though.  We got in (I insisted on driving - neither one of us is that used to driving in rain, but Vegas-boy doesn't even have monsoons where he lives.... plus I have like 10 years more driving experience than him)  Had to drive extremely slowly.  The streets were like rivers.  I tried to stay in the middle of the road where there was less water, but I would not cross the middle line even when A. told me to.  "Look, the other cars are doing it!"  he said.  "I don't care" was my response.  I would go in the left-turn-only lanes, but not over the double yellow lines.  Our first strategy was to stay on Central as long as possible, figuring the freeway would be full of idiots.  But then we got to the historic district and I thought we should try a different street, seemed like the flooding was worse there.  Went up 19th Ave - that was even worse.  I wasn't scared but I could see the potential for a small car like mine to get swept away if we got into any deeper waters.  I made my right turns from the middle of the street, I wasn't going near those curbs.

So we headed to the freeway after all.  It was indeed better than the streets.  There were some idiots going really fast (A. saw one car lose control in the fast lane!  But it didn't crash)  At Greenway we noticed a bunch of headlights to our right.... cars were going up the access road in the wrong direction.  Figuring the cops obviously must be directing them to do that, we looked for an accident - huge pileup of cars at the intersection, A. counted 13!  Dang.  It was probably one of those things where one car skids out of control and crashes into the next car which crashes into the next..... I wonder how many accidents there were around the Valley last night.  There were power outages at a lot of intersections on our way home.  I remarked once that it kind of felt like being in a video game, navigating the river-like streets while it was still pouring rain and without even the aid of traffic signals at times.

After we made it home safe and sound, we promptly peeled off our drenched clothes and jumped in the shower.  I normally don't like to shower at night cuz my hair does funky stuff the next morning, but we HAD to, it was gross.  We laid our clothes in the garage and on the patio to dry.  I changed out my purse.... lots of stuff got wet but luckily my phone and my iPod were okay (my pink iPod sock got soaked!  It did its job of protecting the iPod very well)

So once again, I didn't fall asleep 'til after midnight.  Tonight I swear to God I'm going to bed early.  A. is gonna go to the game again (he has a buddy there with great seats, we bought our tickets and went to sit in his section last night, right behind home plate on the lower level) - but he understands why I don't want to.  I need to do some Avon-ing and catch up on stuff at home - mainly SLEEEEEEEEP.

Oh and it was COLD!!!!!  We were shivering, and others who were fleeing to their cars in the rain were commenting on the cold as well.  It's unheard of to be cold in August here, unless you're inside a too-well-air-conditioned building (that happens to me a lot).

My car was still wet this morning.  I put a towel down on the seat but still got a little wet - my butt is wet.  Good thing I'm wearing a black skirt today!

I remember that day! That storm was CRAZY. And as you know our streets DO flood very easily... not designed to handle lots of water!

Hahaha, yes I'm not like a TOTALLY frigid bitch. Just mostly. Except when drunk. LOL
