Sep. 7th, 2006 05:56 pmI had some errands to run after work. I pulled into "my" gas station. I had just put the gas cap on the ground when I heard the most horrible sound - if not the most horrible sound, it's right up there in the top five: the horrible crashing of metal into metal. Is there anyone who's been in a car accident who doesn't at least get chills when they hear it?
Right where I had turned in a whole 10 seconds or so before, this poor little car got squashed in between two pickups. I didn't see it, I just heard it. I am really NOT good in emergency situations. By the time I thought to get my ass over there to check things out, one of the pickup truck guys was already on his cellphone. I heard shouts of "Are you okay?" and everyone was able to get out of their vehicles, thank God.
This probably makes me a horrible person, but I felt really bad for that middle car. Not the lady in the car, but the car itself. I wanted to cry. I'm sure it was totaled. It was all accordioned up. The truck in the front had minor damage, the truck in the back had more serious damage, but that car in the middle was just... ick.
I don't know if I would have been in that accident had I been 10 seconds behind. I didn't see it, I don't know whose fault it was. But I'm going to thank my guardian angel anyway.
I'm about due to have an accident, too. I've passed the average time span between accidents for this area, according to some survey or another. I drove extra cautiously going home, that horrible sound ringing in my ears. It still is. I hate that sound. May it force me to be a better driver!
