Notes: Angst, Anakin POV
The physical pain was not so intense that he couldn’t block it out; lightsaber wounds cauterized themselves within moments of infliction. The emotional pain, however, was another matter.
Obi-Wan had done this to him. The man with whom he had achieved legendary status in battle as the unbeatable team of Kenobi and Skywalker. The man Anakin had loved and looked up to for most of his life. Now, Obi-Wan stood far above him on the bank, shouting out words that fell on deaf ears. His lips were moving, but the only sound Anakin heard was the thunder of his own rage. All the love he’d once felt for this man was gone. A powerful hatred grew in its place, intensifying with every passing second.
"I hate you!" he spat hoarsely, unable to express himself in Obi-Wan’s more eloquent fashion. He still hungered to hurt his former Master, and verbal weapons were all he had left.
Suddenly, acute agony took hold of Anakin as the flames began to ravage what was left of his body. His survival instinct kicked in and he reached for Obi-Wan with his only remaining limb. He won’t leave me here to burn to death, he thought desperately. Please, Obi-Wan... don’t turn your back on me...
But Obi-Wan merely looked down upon him with a mixture of pity and disgust before taking his leave. Alone to face the most excruciating pain he’d ever experienced, Anakin writhed about helplessly, his shrill screams piercing the heavy air. He hoped that the sound of his agony, and perhaps the stench of his burning flesh, would haunt Obi-Wan for the rest of his days.

Date: 2008-02-24 06:39 pm (UTC)But seriously, this is one fantastic drabble, quite possibly my favorite that you've written so far. Why, you ask? There's the subject matter, of course (the end of Obi-Wan and Anakin's friendship, in my opinion, doesn't truly happen until this very point, when Anakin shouts that he hates Obi-Wan, when Obi-Wan leaves Anakin to burn). But the language you employ here, your gift for describing not only the physical pain, but especially the emotional divide that has opened up between them is just exquisite, as is that powerful last line.
