First painting of 2016 complete!
Mar. 13th, 2016 01:25 pmFandom: technically "The Last of Us" but not even a fan would recognize it as it never appears in the game, lol. I believe the reference pic I looked at was concept art.
Title: untitled
Subject: snowy winter scene, Colorado
Medium: Acrylic
Rating: G
Warnings: None
Notes: I am seriously incapable of taking a nonblurry pic to save my life, even with my perfect ipod camera, sigh. There isn't a high level of detail to this one though, not as much as I had originally intended. I'll have to hang it somewhere that you can't really take a close look at it. Ha!
This time I took a pic after each painting session. It took me six times. Feels like longer than that to me, I guess because of the gap between some of the sessions. I figured
frostbit_sky, if no one else, might like to see the progression :)
Actually, the first pic should have been the canvas as it looked after I shlopped gesso over an old, never-finished painting that I started in high school. I don't remember when I gesso'd it but that was also many years ago. I will never do that again! I'd figured it would be like starting anew, and it was, color-wise... but not texture. These pics are probably blurry enough that you can't tell but there are many flaws and it made some parts, the sky in particular, a real bitch to paint. It didn't feel like a primed canvas at all. Maybe I didn't do it carefully enough back in the day.

1. I kind of liked how the trees look like people here, all creepy-like. Early on, when I'm done for the day and have leftover paint, I tend to just slap it on there, knowing it will get painted over. The sky was already giving me fits.

2. Gave up on the sky (I did like how the left side looked, like it was raining in the distance, much like the reference pic). The water got off to a good start.

3. This was a good day, I got the mountains pretty much done (later ended up changing one for the worse though, I see, looking back, gah) and got the trees going. I think I gave that one a "spinal cord" to remind myself to go back and fix the top later. Seriously! I'm sure if I go look closer now I'll find something else I meant to fix later and never did.

4. More work on the trees and now the water is done!

5. Added the village. I intended to go back and do more work in here but decided it looked okay as is.
And 4 pics of the finished painting, cuz I couldn't get a perfect shot in one!

6. I think the 2nd pic shows it the best but it cut off the top, grrrrrr. When I took it to different rooms where I could have a white-ish background framing it when I stepped back enough to get it all in frame, the colors look a little screwy, like they got tinged with yellow. Weird. It better look dark/purple-y like the first two wherever I hang it.
I feel like it takes me longer to paint than it "should." Maybe that's silly and there is no "should," it's only in my head? This time I can (partly) blame the canvas. Each session is between 1.5 - 3 hours (after 3 hours my hand usually starts cramping, and usually I get to a good stopping point before then. Only one of these was 3 hours).

Date: 2016-03-13 09:08 pm (UTC)I love the colors, the purple gives the mountains a sort of surreal warmth, and the pale golden reflection in the water makes me imagine a full moon straight above, beyond what appears on the canvas.
Really well done!

Date: 2016-03-13 09:20 pm (UTC)I figured there was a full moon too, even though it wasn't in the pic, because it didn't look like the light source was the village (if I'm wrong about that I'm in trouble cuz mine ended up way different than the original!). And I purpled it up a little more too, esp. the mountains.

Date: 2016-03-14 03:05 am (UTC)The rendering of the water is perfect. Also the snow on the trees.
I like the ominous dark sky on the left.
Brava!
What is gesso?

Date: 2016-03-14 04:02 am (UTC)Gesso is what we used to have to prime canvases with. Nowadays it seems to be standard that whatever you buy in the store is already primed and ready to go, you don't have to do anything to it. I remember being taught how to stretch a canvas, staple it together... so old school! (I never went for the stretching though... that's too 3D for me. I just wanna paint)

Date: 2016-03-15 01:14 am (UTC)Yea, the stretching is too labor intensive. LOL

Date: 2017-02-19 07:24 am (UTC)Did you...ever do any illustrations for the juvenile books or other novels for grown-ups to read ??
Those are the kinds of paintings/drawings that pros would do... *nods to self*
Nicely done, they were !! I really love them, honestly ! :D

Date: 2017-02-20 04:44 am (UTC)I've never illustrated anything, nope... not even fanfic. I think people prefer digital art nowadays, and I have no idea how to do that. None!
