But a quickie this time!

[Poll #2056933]

As a person who will read just about anything out there, I'm a little concerned that I might be insensitive when it comes to warning others of triggery or disturbing content. I would rather not spoil things in the story by over-warning, but maybe that's uncool of me. Does anyone have thoughts to share on this? Any insight from personal experiences, either as reader or author?

The warnings on the fic I'm worried about will probably scare off most would-be readers anyway. But still...

I haven't really needed to do so yet, but on a site like AO3, I'd probably just list out warnings in the summary/tags for the fic as a whole and be done with it. But if I'm doing a multi-chapter fic on LJ, then I'd include warnings as they apply per chapter. Particularly if I'm writing a story I haven't fully outlined in advance.

You might not put off as many readers as you think! I've actually been drawn to reading certain stories BECAUSE of the warnings. Lol.

Hmm, yeah AO3's tags are pretty much always in your face, so that makes sense. On LJ someone could just come along and start reading some middle chapter, the way it's set up. Not sure who would actually do that, but it's more possible than on a fic hosting site!

I don't think I could warn for every possible little thing without overdoing the per-chapter warnings, but maybe for more major stuff... but like, with the stuff I was just kinda-writing today (for my "zero draft" that isn't exactly an outline), I was almost triggering MYSELF, even, so that probably warrants a warning... ha!

I've found that to be true for me too! Maybe we're just freaks though? LOL.

Thanks for your thoughts!

As far as per chapter warnings go, I'm likely to warn at the start of a chapter if it's a big warning like non-con and if that occurs explicitly in less than half the chapters.

The Fruit of Your Intents had 12 chapters but only four had on screen non-con, so I put a note at the start of each of those chapters.

So, warning for "disturbing imagery" every single time might be overdoing it. A lot of it is more mental rather than stuff happening all the time... not sure that would make a difference to anyone?

FOYI didn't bother me at all. Oh, right, that's just me ;) (also might help that I, not knowing the canon, didn't feel any connection to the characters prior to reading though?)

Very thought provoking. I have a general idea of the story from the summary and rating. Other, more complex, warnings do seem to give away too much. Food for thought is that with every read where I've stretched my comfort zone, the next level just gets easier and easier to drop to, if that's the right term. *shrugs* There have been only a few fics or films where I've given up and walked away.

Oh yes, I hate to spoil things! There's one warning I'm actually not going to list immediately, but will make it very clear on the notes for the appropriate chapter, because it's too spoilery, I think. I'm sure some people will see it coming, but I'm hoping some will be surprised... I'm okay with giving up the surprise at the beginning of the chapter though, it's not a huge deal.

When I'm reading, I think it's better to have the suspense of not knowing when something bad's going to happen, but I imagine that's not the case for a more sensitive person. That makes sense about it getting easier as it goes along... seems to be human nature in many regards!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts :D
