lumy12Some part of you realizes that Joel is not actually far away, that he's right there, holding you, rocking you, trying in vein to stop your neck from bleeding-- wait, not in vein... in VAIN... haha... you want to share this last little joke with Joel, to comfort him, tell him you're okay, everything's fine -- don't cry, Joel, I can't stand to see you so upset... death might mean sweet relief from the overwhelming pain, but what would it mean for Joel? What about his pain?
You swear you're moving your lips, but no sound comes out. Everything's receding now: Joel... the pain... the air... Joel... you fight to keep your eyes open, terrified that if you close them, you'll never see him again -- and he's so blurry and distant that you can't even see him now. The pain flares up... if you close your eyes, it fizzles out, but then Joel goes away...
"Ellie! Stay with me-- oh God--"
Time slows to a crawl, every second stretched taut as you fight... fucking fight... just keep at it... I can't, though... I CAN'T... You're going to pass out -- you can feel it. You're just so tired... like someone's placed bricks on your eyelids that you can't lift. You're scared now... afraid of what's happening to you... scared to die, to be alone in this strange--

You can't see Joel, can't hear him... but you feel him... just not with your body. Not with any of your senses.
You know he's holding you tight, protecting you, always...
... ... Joel! I'm so sorry... Thank you... for giving me the best two years of my life... I love you so much... please don't let this break you -- you're AMAZING and you did so much for me... you don't deserve this... please... please don't... PROMISE ME YOU WON'T LET THIS BREAK YOU...
But Joel can't hear your last thoughts... they're trapped inside your useless body. He can't make you any such promises.
I'm so glad you're with me, Joel... ...I'm not afraid anymore...
You float off to sleep and never wake up.
