CYOA Page 50
Sep. 14th, 2013 06:30 pmNo, Ellie! If you close your eyes, you'll fall asleep! You sluggishly rise from the chair and force yourself to walk down the porch steps, to... where? You make the rounds again, checking on the horses, checking on Joel. All is well. You'd like nothing more than to climb into bed next to Joel, but you resist the temptation. Conjuring up images of that creepy little kid (complete with malevolent eyes) helps.
You decide to do a 'perimeter check,' as they would say in Jackson. You circle the mobile home park with your flashlight off, finding the moon's light sufficient and not wanting to draw attention to yourself. The crisp night air on your face helps revive you, and the solitude gives you a chance to think.
Maybe I'm being silly about that kid, you muse. How the fuck would he follow us way out here, when we had a good head start and he doesn't know which way we went? It's now past time to wake up Joel, and you start to think maybe you should just crawl into bed with him, rather than wake him up.
But just as you start to head back to your 'hotel', you get a creepy feeling that someone's watching you! Fuck -- it's GOT to be my imagination... right? I just reasoned through all this... but if it were really just your imagination, would you also hear that rustling noise? Would you also catch a glint of... what? Of--
WHOA NELLY-- it's an animal! Hunting me! You switch on your light and shine it right in the thing's face -- it's a cougar! Fuck fuck fuck FUCK... why didn't I bring the hunting rifle?! Your little pistol would probably only piss it off. Unless you can manage a shot right to its brain... but you're far from point blank range. Far enough that I can make a run for it? You wouldn't have to run all the way back to Joel... just to the nearest mobile home, and pray that the door will open. You think you can do that. It's cheetahs that are the fast ones... right??
Or maybe you can try shooting it; even if you don't kill it, maybe the injury would make it think twice about attacking you. Why didn't I bring my backpack? you lament... but would you have time to sit there and root through it to find a bomb or something anyway? As soon as you move, won't it be--
Maybe if you do nothing, it will just go away. You know some animals will keep to themselves if given a chance (do cougars?!), and humans aren't its normal prey... at least, not as nature intended... what it really wants is a deer or something, right?
If you make a run for it, turn to page 95.
If you shoot/scare the cougar, turn to page 100.
If you stand still and wait for the cougar to leave, turn to page 102.
