A/N: I know, I know, I'm supposed to switch to Ellie POV here if I follow my own MO for scenes like this, but see, when I wrote the "zero draft" of the previous chapter and this one, they were one and the same. I realized that by the time I was done with revisions, it would be way too long for one chapter, so I left a placeholder chapter and figured out how to divide it up later... and since I'd already written so much for Joel, I didn't want to take that away from him :) Thus, we have the fourth Joel chapter in a row. I just checked the rest of the fic, and from here on out, I have no more than TWO consecutive chapters for either of them. And in the end, it works out equally.

I can't believe it's been 20 years since Titanic. The James Cameron version, that is. I was soooo obsessed with this movie, omg. I saw it some obscene # of times in the theater... like 18 or 19 I think? (it helped that it was playing for 8 months... that doesn't happen with movies anymore!) And I had this log I kept of the date, time, and place where I saw each one, and whom I saw it with -- most of the time I was alone, but anyone I knew who wanted to go see it, I would go with. Then when I got the dvd I recorded those viewings, too. Unfortunately, this log is on a floppy disk and I can't access it anymore. It's no longer accurate, either, because I've watched the dvd since then. I think I printed out an early version, but damned if I know where I put it! I'm a paper hoarder; I have boxes and bins full of stuff like that.

I remember how excited I was when a friend presented me with the script. I suppose he found it on the internet somewhere, but that was all brand new to me back then -- I DO know where that is, because I put it in a nice binder :) It almost makes me want to reactivate my Facebook just long enough to thank him for that and see if he's like "wtf?" or if he remembers. ....almost, but naaaahhhhh.

The sad thing is, when I read about how it's returning to theatres... and to one fairly close to me... I feel like I don't even want to go see it. That I can just watch the dvd if I want to (and I haven't even watched it in years). I wish I was that same girl of 20 years ago. Even at the time, I was "too old" for such obsession and everyone thought I would outgrow that behavior... HA! Little did they know. Fangirl for life!

I wrote the rough draft right after playing that part of the game last -- and it turned out like a companion piece to "Detach" although I didn't intend for it to be :)

He mumbled in his sleep. Not loud enough or intelligible enough that Ellie could understand, though. He seemed a little... agitated.

She watched the rain falling in sheets, wondering if it would let up before they had to get through it. Wondering what it would be like out there. What will happen to me when we get to where we’re going? She could never walk into a QZ again. She'd have to be smuggled inside, and wasn't that harder than getting smuggled out? Maybe the Fireflies had better living arrangements than any QZ anyhow, and she could stay with them indefinitely.

Maybe she could pick up where Riley had left off.

The sounds coming from the couch became a little louder, but Ellie still couldn't make them out as words. Should she wake him up? He was probably having a bad dream. So much for resting.

She decided to leave him be. She didn't know the guy, but she got the impression he was the type who would strike first, think about it later. She was just fine sitting in the windowsill, watching the rain wash the world. Wash it, or attack it? she mused to herself.

What's taking that Tess chick so long? She hoped nothing had happened to her. If Tess and Joel were partners, they could talk and make the decisions amongst themselves and Ellie could just quietly follow along, not drawing any attention to herself, not accidentally saying too much or pissing anyone off (as she had a habit of doing). The dynamic would be quite different if there was only one of them with her.

Joel's whimpering noises dissolved into murmurs, making Ellie think the dream would perhaps pass without waking him, but then he woke with a start, his eyes flying open... that moment of WHERE THE FUCK AM I and the subsequent oh, right recognition playing across his face in the same second. "You mumble in your sleep," she told him, just for something to say. He didn't answer her. Sat up, held his head in his hands. "I hate bad dreams," she ventured again. Well, duh, who LIKES them? she berated herself.

But all he said was, "Me too." No snarky comeback. The nicest thing he'd said to her thus far, actually.

The woman's return was a relief. Ellie sensed that Tess and Joel were friends, not just business partners. And anyone who had a friend -- a non-asshole-ish friend -- couldn't be a total asshole, right?

Whatever. Ellie reminded herself she didn't have to like them; she wasn’t here to make friends. They all had a job to do. A few hours from now, these people would be on their way home, and she would never see them again. Ellie could just start making friends with the Fireflies; surely some of them had to like kids.
